Overview
At the present situation, there is no exact estimate on the exact number of people affected by Thalassemia in and around Madurai, the second largest city in TamilNadu. There is no specific medical facility available at present either in private or the Government. The cases handled by Government Rajaji Hospital are the only indication to the people affected by Thalassemia in the southern parts of TamilNadu. The data conforms to the state percentage of population affected by the disease which is around 8% and the percentage in Madurai District is around 11%.
There are some pediatricians running private clinic taking care of some of the patients. There are only few sophisticated private hospitals having specialized Haematologist across the State. There is no specific independent facility for Haematology available in any of these hospitals.
Thalassemia the lesser known disease in this part of the State is not properly addressed by any forums, not focused by Hospitals or clinics in the whole of TamilNadu excluding Chennai. Besides, the patients reporting to the Government Hospitals are economically backward and not even affording to visit the hospital for treatment. At present there are around 45 children undergoing Blood Transfusion in the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital. Some of the patients are travelling from places of 100 kms radius. The number may be three or four times cared by private clinics in various towns.
The immediate minimum requirement for the poor children undergoing treatment in Government Hospital is to have a separate ward with Blood Transfusion facilities and making the availability of medicines for Iron Chelation.
The Government doctors have little time to spare for proper care of children affected by Thalassemia. An exclusive ward may help this facility to the children improve.
Nivethan tries to set up a forum or welfare association to follow up the need of the patients more effectively and make necessary association for wider publicity for awareness creation and prevention.
The most modern facility, a sterile blood transfusion centre with few beds, can be the need of the hour. This facility will improve awareness, better treatment, prevention and an exclusive care for ailing children. Nivethan makes the best possible efforts to accomplish the need of the region in making the lives of the children better.

How can you help us?
Make a donation: The cost per child per month is Rs 3000 for life saving chelation medications alone. Think of people from very poor economic background who cannot afford for this.
Blood donation: Thalassaemia is a genetic condition where the children need monthly blood transfusion lifelong. The cost of blood is unaffordable. Replacing blood donors for obtaining blood is an option. But, sometimes parents have a difficulty to find a blood donor for their child. We urge people to donate blood for thalassemics. You can also donate blood during our blood donation camps at Madurai which will be organised twice a year. For more information, please contact us at nivethan.mdu@gmail.com
Be a sponsor:
Sponsor a bone marrow transplantation for a child - Bone marrow transplantation is the only curative option. We need 10 lakhs per child for this procedure.
Sponsor a blood on rotation system - The timely requirement of blood transfusions is a life and death situation. In this blood rotation program, a group of volunteers “adopt a patient” meaning whenever a patient requires blood, one of the group members is available for the blood donation.
Sponsor establishing a blood transfusion centre at Madurai - We hope to get to schools and colleges to raise awareness and provide a centre for transfusion, testing and counseling.
Spread awareness:Learn more about Thalassemia and join us spread the world. You can participate in our work and also join us in our facebook and ning platform for wider understanding and dissemination.
